Want to be able to create awesome, upbeat and fun game art to use in your 2D games, Scratch projects and animations? This is the course for you! Come with HackLab as we take two days to show you how to create the retro-look 8-Bit artwork prevalent in so many classic arcade games. We'll help you to create a game-ready sprite sheet filled with different images you can embed into any digital project to make it look rad!

About the course

Many students regularly create games and animations using simple sprites, often garnered from the web or from the (boring!) default libraries included with many software packages. This course will give them the skills and knowledge required to produce their own customised and unique 8-bit sprites and artwork. As fledgling developers, students need to learn the skills involved with creating original artwork for their projects to avoid plagiarism and sprite-jacking later in their careers. As budding digital artists, this course provides an excellent primer to creating fun, vibrant yet simple artwork they can insert into any project they create in the future. Students who enrol for this course are encouraged to use their new artwork in the companion course: Make-A-Mario!

A LAPTOP IS REQUIRED FOR THIS COURSE. You may borrow one from HackLab for the duration of the course for £30, just add it to your basket.

As a Hacker, you're responsible for creating a useful, interesting or fun piece of work that others will want to use. As a result, you must have strong creative abilities to design technologies that are unique, visually appealing, interesting and thought-provoking. You’ll construct projects that engage users, encouraging them to purchase new items you create when released for public distribution.

Design Process

You will be creating and applying all the artwork, models, surfaces, images and textures which comprise your project. You will need to consider the layout and flow of your project, as well as create flow charts to map out the activities and people involved in your project’s development.
