Makespace Tech Clubs

Mac and Makespace are teaming up to bring you some after school clubs!

We mentioned a little while back that Mac has ventured out on his own to set up some educational programs in Cambridge. He has teamed up with Makespace to bring 3 brand new after school clubs to all you budding Coders, Game Developers and aspiring Makers.

Below you will find details for the clubs, if you are interested in signing up you can click the button below each section and send an email to Mac. He will then send you a registration form and details for payment.

If you have any additional queries you can contact him at mac@thehacklab.co.uk

Description; A club for the Code-Kiddies out there! Instead of going the traditional route of an in-depth look at 1 particular language, we will be focusing on coding principles that are applicable to all development. Such as variables, data types, operators, classes, abstraction… and more.

The learning will be done with 3 different languages; Python, C#, and C++.

Each lesson will be focused on a principle of coding, taken from the national curriculum and some more advanced topics, with a practical task to use one of the languages as a demonstration of the principle. Almost all programming skills are transferable, and this club will show you how.

Description; The one for aspiring Game Developers and Artists. A meeting ground for young developers where they can share ideas, experience and passion for video games.

Forming small development teams, we will meet weekly to have development sessions with a mentor but ultimately, they will be creating a game themselves from scratch. I am arranging for developers from the industry in Cambridge to come visit the club later in the semester and talk to the students about their games, career goals and generally offer advice to inspire the next generation of developers

Every so often we may also enter Game-Jams and various other developing competitions. A club where young developers can be mentored and allowed the space for their creativity to shine.

Description; A club for the gadgeteers and gizmologists among you. Makespace is a community built around Makers and their projects, so we are very excited to bring you the first Makespace Maker club.

The sessions will be split into 3 parts.

Creating digital media (4 weeks)
2 of the most popular tools in any maker space are the lasercutters and 3D printers. we will spend the first 4 weeks showing you how to create files ready for use on these machines. This will cover the basics of Vector designs (lasercutters) as well as an intro to 3D modelling for printing.

Using the tools. (3 weeks)
After we have all the files prepared we will show you how to use the tools in the main Makespace workroom. Each child will have a chance to use both the 3D printers and the laser-cutters to make their ideas from the first part of the course. This will include a safety briefing and basic training on the operation and proper use of the tools.

Gadgetry. (4 weeks)
Leading up to the Christmas break we will look at Gadgets in all their glory. A theme will be set at the beginning of these sessions and the students will be tasked with designing a gadget and making a prototype to prove their idea works. The teaching in this section will involve using code and electronics to make our ideas a reality. The topic will include: the internet of things and connected devices, sensors, robotics, SenseHAT, MakeyMakeys and more.
